Walk the Siq to the Treasury at Dawn
One of the New Seven Wonders of the World — and it earns it. Petra opens at 6:30am — arrive then. The 1.2km Siq gorge is an extraordinary natural corridor of 80-metre sandstone walls, narrowing until suddenly it opens onto the full facade of the Treasury, carved entirely from rose-red rock by the Nabataeans over 2,000 years ago. Nothing prepares you for it. The first hour after opening is magical — the golden light hits the carved stone and the crowds haven't arrived. This is the photo you came for.

Hike to the Monastery (Ad Deir) — The Hidden Wonder
After you walk the Siq and reach the Treasury, keep going — most visitors stop there and miss the best part. Continue through the valley past the Royal Tombs and follow the signs to Ad Deir, reached after an 800-step climb through the hills. The Monastery is even bigger than the Treasury — 45 metres wide and 50 metres tall — more remote, and far less crowded. The view from the clifftop above it is arguably the best in all of Jordan. Budget a full day for both.

On Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings the Siq is lit with 1,500 candles and you walk in silence to the Treasury, where Bedouin music plays under the stars.
